World Sight Day 2015

Today is ‘World Sight Day’, a day of awareness each year that seeks to focus our attention on blindness and visual impairment. The IAPB (International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness) is behind the promotion of World Sight Day. They highlighted today several key facts – some of which we have listed below:

• Approximately 285 million people worldwide live with low vision and blindness
• Of these, 39 million people are blind and 246 million have moderate or severe visual impairment
• 90% of blind people live in low-income countries
• Yet 80% of visual impairment is avoidable – i.e. readily treatable and/or preventable
• Restorations of sight, and blindness prevention strategies are among the most cost-effective interventions in health care

One of David Gartry’s sons, a musician, is performing today with his band ‘Bella Figura‘ at a ‘Sound For Sight‘ event in London. Sound For Sight are a team that set out to fund research into curable degenerative eye disease retinitis pigmentosa (RP), through the power of live music.
