Professor Xian-qun Fan MD, PhD, the Co-President of The School of Medicine in The Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, and Head of Ophthalmology in the Ninth People’s Hospital, invited me to visit his department and deliver a lecture on “Lasers in Cataract and Refractive Surgery”. The lecture took place on December the 28th in the hospital post-graduate centre and was well received.

It was an amazing trip – fascinating to visit China of course and to see a big Chinese hospital in action: clinics, operating theatres and research labs. All very advanced – I was very impressed. I complimented Professor Fan at the beginning of my lecture on heading up an excellent department – and especially advancing the management of a range of Orbital and Adnexal diseases including the removal of orbital tumours and the important subsequent reconstructive surgery required (which he and his team have advanced significantly with very sophisticated 3D computerised analysis).

It was a privilege to be invited and I am especially grateful to my consultant colleague from Brighton, Professor Christopher Liu, for facilitating the link with China. I also extended an open invitation to all of my new Chinese colleagues to visit Moorfields Eye Hospital. I hope they come.
