30 Years in Ophthalmology

With a distinguished career in ophthalmology spanning some 3 decades David Gartry remains at the forefront of vision correction and eye surgery. He is one of the most experienced eye surgeons in the UK and was the first surgeon in the UK to carry out laser eye surgery. Establishing his own eye clinic on Wimpole Street in 2015 has allowed David to realise his own vision on pushing forward and innovating in this field. 2016 marked a special landmark year for David as he celebrated 30 years in Ophthalmology. We’ve highlighted some key milestones over the years here and look forward to many more.

1986
First started working in Ophthalmology as SHO
1988
David Gartry become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and The Royal College of Ophthalmologists
1989
David Gartry performs the first laser eye surgery procedure in the United Kingdom.
1992
Moves to Moorfields and becomes responsible for the first LASIK research publishing more than 50 scientific papers relating to laser eye surgery.
1998
Was responsible for the first LASIK (laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis) research protocols at Moorfields
2000
Underwent LASIK surgery to correct his short-sight and astigmatism
2007
Became Director of Refractive Surgery, Moorfields Eye Hospital
2013
Celebrates 20 years at Moorfields as a Consultant
2015
Opens ‘The Wimpole Street Eye Clinic’ on Wimpole Street, London
2016
